Indigo Dye and Shibori

ColourField Indigo Workshop

Have a creative day of using the magical ancient blue Indigo dye and patterning techniques. Work in the ColourField studio in Cardiff learning how to make a vat and then use traditional Japanese Shibori resist dyeing techniques to create amazing textures and patterns. Everything you learn you’ll be able to do at home and you can buy a dye kit to take away with you.  You’ll leave with a great set of samples and a dyed up-cycled garment or pieces of cloth for your own personal project. 2018 Make it in Wales course in rural West Wales… I’m working with the lovely Make it in Wales team again next year for our 3 day Indigo course. It’s held in a beautiful location on a working farm where you’ll have time to develop and refine your indigo dyeing knowledge and skills. Everyone makes loads of great new work, new friends and has a relaxing, constructive tine away from normal life. On this extensive course, I’ll talk about natural and synthetic Indigo, making and maintaining the vat, preparation of cloth, folded, stitched and clamped resist techniques, combining with eco plant prints and dyeing and finishing. Book HERE

I thoroughly enjoyed this course. It was very well run, everything we needed was supplied and our course tutor, Cat Lewis was an inspiring teacher. She taught us how to make an Indigo vat, not just how to use one and after she had demonstrated lots of different tying techniques, allowed us to develop our own special interests. We all ended up with favourite materials and tried inventing our own patterns. All in all, it was brilliant. I would definitely encourage others to have a go. I am still dyeing with indigo. Cat opened a door for me and I am immensely grateful.”
